I was already in a Weird Phase, and now it seems to be morphing to Even Weirder. For me, that is. Because I never "go back" to write old fandoms/characters. I just... can't. I don't know what it is or understand it or necessarily even want it to be that way, but it's how I've been for... well, forever in fandom.

Now suddenly, due to the Canadian Shack meme, or the stars aligning just so, or in some sort of need for that nostalgic/bittersweet feeling I get when I revisit old fandoms, I seem to be full of character voices for old fandoms. Huh.

That made me wonder, how do other people experience their fandoms? The answer could be different for different modes of participation, too. For me always in the past, I neither wrote OR read OR looked at art etc. I just... was done. Some people, I think, continue reading but stop writing, and some people always continue to participate in older fandoms, just not as intensively.

So how is it for you? And have you changed in your answers, like I seem to be? Because I was always mono fannish, but have been multifandom for a while now, following and reading quite an array of fandoms (when I have time, sporadically). And now I appear to be actually writing characters I thought I'd never write about again -- not because I didn't still love them, but just because of what I said, how once I move on, I can't write the older ones any more.

How do all of you, anyone reading this, experience fandoms? Has that changed? What do you like/dislike about how you experience fandoms? Do you like the time "between" fandoms or not? Or not have one? Can you write/draw/create in older fandoms even as newer ones come along?

Why do I suddenly want an aubrey/maturin au in which Jack forgot to turn off his cell phone at a concert and it's that, rather than him beating his hand in time with the music rudely, that riles up Stephen, and that's how they meet omgggg.

Yes yes, I realize there are like two people who will read this who will get the Master and Commander reference, but this is totally awesome regardless... watch [and more importantly, listen!!!] as the musician reacts to the cell phone going off in the middle of a concert. In a synagogue.

I... Okay, I needed the distraction. Plus, I love [personal profile] cesperanza and fandom memes and really, everyone should write a Canadian Shack fic and read and feedback all the stories there!

So anyway, because I couldn't help it... Not betad, written on the fly and to soothe due to some rl stuff I'm dealing with:

Omg this is awesome: Canadian Shack 10th Anniversity PARTY/fic fest: http://archiveofourown.org/collections/canadian_shack_2011/works

See this post of Cesperanza's to learn all about the history of the ~Canadian Shack meme, the ten year anniversary, and the seeking of little tiny fics from everyone and anyone for any pairings/gen characters and fandoms. Just, have them end up in a Canadian Shack lol!

There are already quite a few fics there with assorted characters from many different fandoms ~shacking up haha. A worthy venture.

Due to being in the middle of a pretty horrible rl situation with family rn, I'm unlikely to play, but if I were... who should I ~shack up haha and under what circumstances?

WRITING PROCESS MUSINGS/THOUGHTS ETC.:

My assignment this year was [personal profile] pun. We were matched on Shelter, the fandom we had in common. And a lovely, lovely fandom it is (I have SO MUCH LOVE for that movie, as me writing a fic and gushing about the movie has shown). So I set about to start writing a Shelter fic for her. Only, there was a somewhat intriguing other fandom/source on there, one I'd never heard of per se, but I'd heard of another film by the same people, the Yossie/Jagger film, and seen a few scenes from it. Hmmmm... I was intrigued. It didn't hurt that her request was awesome and that it seemed from her request (and stalking her journal) that what she wanted in this fandom was something I love: hot men having sex after the buildup of ust (p.s. by the way, Pun, if you see this, AWESOME recs on your journal... lol I read fic in fandoms I'm not even in!! <3).

But it would be silly, right, to try to do a new source.... or would it? lots more talking about the writing process under here, as well as the amazing, gorgeous source, Walk on Water )
Wildflowers
I ended up writing two fics this year, my regular assignment and a last-minute Pinch Hit (well, not as last minute as some... I got it on the morning of the 21st. I'm still o_O at myself). I'm going to write more about the whole experience and talk about writing both -- I loved both experiences sooo much -- as well as writing my THANKS to the WONDERFUL PEOPLE who audienced, betad, held my hand as I cried lol, provided information and insight into Israel/Hebrew and Germany/German and Tony Stark/JARVIS/Cap, cheerled, etc. -- but for now I'll just get this out there... I wrote these two fics this year:

The source for my regular assignment is the awesome, amazing movie, Walk on Water, which you should all go watch RIGHT NOW (links to the few Youtube clips available included in story; full thing available streaming on Netflix and Amazon). I am going to talk more about this later in a separate post, but, I fell in love with the characters, setting, themes, and just like the recipient, was all asldkjfskadfjWHAT at the end, which is lovely in its own way, except for how it FORGOT THE SLASH :D. (Side note: there were ZERO Yuletide fics in this fandom (1 fic TOTAL in AO3, a small genfic), so this was the ~purest YT experience I suppose a person can have).

Note: I wrote a special Prologue for this fic JUST SO PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T WATCHED THE MOVIE CAN READ IT. I PUT THE WHOLE STORY THERE! EVERYONE CAN READ IT!!! There is porn! <3

kiss me strong (kiss me till it hurts) (20853 words) by faviconcathalin

Relationships: axel/eyal, Eyal/Axel
Characters: Eyal, Axel
Summary:

Eyal finally lets Axel up for air when his heart is tripping fast in his chest, when he feels Axel go from surprised and uncertain to hungry and wanting. “You have a habit of pushing me up against things,” Axel growls, flipping them around so it’s Eyal against the door.

“Are you complaining?” Eyal asks, while Axel kisses down his neck, undoes the top button of his shirt and sucks at the soft skin there.

Eyal, a widowed Mossad agent, is assigned to pretend to be a tour guide and show Axel, a gay German, around Israel. Neither man is prepared for the effect they will have on each other, or for the changes that will occur within themselves as they struggle to come to terms with their friendship, their pasts, and their attraction to each other.

And then, grabbed at the last minute because I got into the Yuletide spirit and wanted to help out (not to mention, had bookmarked the recipient's awesome prompts early on and had paid Texts From Last Night a few visits thanks to her haha):

Um, and if anyone's thinking the latter story means I'm likely going to be paying continuing attention to Captain America, Iron Man and Avengers fandom, you would be... right. Very right. <3

Also! I was a bit reticent about reccing tony/steve fics in the Avengers fandom generally due to preserving anonymity etc., but now I will at a minimum add all my favorites publicly on my Pinboard or hopefully rec them here, time permitting.

Another small set of recs. As I think I've mentioned, I'm WAY BEHIND my normal reading pace in Yuletide, meaning I've only read a handful of the amazing, amazing stories there. I'll try to continue to rec stuff, maybe even one more time today before Reveals, and definitely over the next couple of weeks... there is so much wonderful there, it's a goldmine. And there are huge swathes of fic I know I'll want to read.... the list goes on some of the larger fandoms I haven't even read ONE fic in yet!

And while I'm at it, I just want to say, participating fully for the first time this year has been WONDERFUL and AMAZING and I tip my hat to the mods and the participants, who make it possible each year for fandom to have so many beautiful stories it would not otherwise have.

(P.S. IS NO ONE GOING TO TRY TO GUESS EITHER OF MY STORIES???? WOE. IF YOU WANT ANOTHER CLUE I'LL GIVE YOU ONE, JUST COMMENT <333)

This Yuletide I...
1a. (too lazy to change numbering ha!) Had a ton of fun whittling down my list of possible fandoms to request in, and then crafting my letter about it, and then figuring out what fandoms I felt comfortable enough to offer in
1. discovered a new source and fell in love
2. immersed myself in the characters in that source and wrote and wrote and journeyed along with them and had a truly fantastic writing experience, relishing the joy of making something just for a particular recipient, challenging myself to make it the best I could
3. betad for some wonderful people and got betad by some wonderful people, having tons of fun and learning a lot in the process

Shiny fic recs under the cut, plus more thanks to the Yuletide mods and pariticipants )
Wildflowers
I'm not making my way through Yuletide very quickly. As in, not quickly at all, mainly having to do with rl demands. I always try to read and rec a lot before Reveal, but I don't know if I'm going to get through even a tenth of the YT fics I could conceivably enjoy by then! I try not to post one at a time because SPAM, but otoh I don't want to wait until I have 10 or something, because FOREVER.

So with no further ado, here are three awesome stories. Please feel free to rec me stuff in the comments if you want... I seriously have read only a handful or two so far! (And am following the system known as "random" :D ):

I can barely if at all remember The Breakfast Club, but this story works as a love story, a story of connecting briefly, then reconnecting much later, as well as a story of coming into one's own as you grow up. Wonderful:

Relationships: John Bender/Brian Johnson
Characters: Brian Johnson, John Bender

People in Shermer had made up their minds about who John Bender was years ago. All John needed was the chance to prove them wrong.

This story is everything I would want in a threesome fic for Captain America. There's anawesome kickass but still era-appropriate Peggy, a sarcastic yet sweet underneath Bucky, and an innnocent but not afraid Steve. So much love for this story:

I have no idea who these characters are, but this can be read as original fiction... a wonderful voice for Annie telling the story, blanket forts and fun, and you can feel the love between the characters all the way through. Here we go, some recs in the extremely-random reading I've been doing in Yuletide (and Madness). I'm still super busy so have hardly scratched the surface compared to where I often am as far as my reading. Literally this time my reading "method" has been... "Oh! Shiny! Huh, let's click it, shall we?" Well of course in actuality these are in fandoms I know something about already, I guess. Except for the ones that aren't. :D There will be more to come, for sure, over the next couple of days!

First, I got a ficlet for Madness! It's a lovely ficlet/drabble about my favorite characters in the Liveship Traders Trilogy (also The Farseer Series). It addresses to much so beautifully in just a few words, in particular issues of gender (something I was fascinated by in this character) and his/her feelings for a main character in the Farseer Series.

I was starting to gather some Yuletide recs, and realized there are a few fics I want to rec that aren't Yuletide, things I've read recently. Actually I know I've read other stuff I wanted to rec, but can't find things and just generally am on the fly, so I'm going to let myself just go with these for now. (Yuletide recs coming imminently btw)

All of fandom I'm sure already knows about these beauties, but just in case:

Semaphore by [personal profile] devildoll, a stunning and long fic with a very real Tony and Steve gradually moving towards each other, and figuring out their place in each other's lives. There is also offscreen Tony/Pepper, and a beautiful, achy and wonderful treatment of a breakup, handled in a way that respects everyone involved. I just. Seriously, this is one of those 'keep and read again' type of fics and even if you don't ship tony/steve, it's well worth a read. Also populated with bonus hilarious and wonderful side characters lolol! (author notes it's coming soon to the AO3 if that's a factor for you)

And also this one, super late so probably everyone's read it. It's insanely hot and has amazing characterization and is super creative. I don't know either of the fandoms that are crossed over, though I've read a few Generation Kill fics, and because of dsudis' skill these characters just ZING are present on the screen. And did I mention, way hot? I want about a hundred thousand more words of this. Something that could have been OTT and absurd instead is deep and achy and you just get ~transported to a world where all this makes total sense:

P.S. This is part of a SERIES... I only linked to this one, but there are earlier ones too aldkjfsdlkj.

And then even more super late and I'm everyone on the planet has read it, but I had a number of lost months, and somehow missed this. Ugh, Helenish, how is she so amazing. This is seriously one of the best things I have ever read. I read it as original fiction, basically, and it's better than that. Trust me. I don't really read Inception fic, and honestly these characters -- I didn't even think of them that way, not that they aren't those guys, but it's super au and totally works as gorgeous original fic. Everyone's doing it! I guess I will too. <3

Can you guess what fic(s) I wrote for Yuletide?(I wrote TWO, insane person that I am). Now, no cheating! Please don't guess if you have inside info of any kind including CHEATING because that is bad!

But if you have a guess, drop it here! I think guessing even one will be hard this year -- I think? (It's so hard for me to view my writing from an outsider perspective) Here are clues:

1. one of the fics is probably pretty recognizably me in the sense it has my ~typical themes and emotions and angst and sex and overall style, but it's in a tiny tiny fandom I'd never even heard of before this Yuletide (and that I now love desperately)
2. the second fic is in a style less commonly associated with me, I think
3. the second fic is a crossover
4. both fics have m/m pairings
5. ADDED A CLUE! One is about twice as long as the other, and they're both long (though haha with me recently that pretty much goes without saying :()

PRIZES. If you guess one of my fics correctly, I will write you a little drabble or eensy ficlet, but you have to give me a choice of at least 3 different fandoms that I have written or am comfortable in (hopefully a Yuletide fandom(this is because of my extreme problem of Freezing Up when doing requests). Sorry, but NO continuations/extra scenes from any prior fic of mine... I just can't do those (well, there could be exceptions actually, so you never know <3). :(

If you guess two of my fics correctly, then you are CHEATING or you are amazing. If that were to happen, I would write you a ficlet, tiny, like 200 words, and again you'd have to give me a choice of at least 3 fandoms I've written/am comfortable in (hopefully a Yuletide fandom!)

PLAY WITH ME PLAY WITH ME. IF THAT'S NOT ENOUGH CLUES I'LL GIVE YOU ANOTHER, JUST DROP A COMMENT <333

So, guess away! Please!!?? It's fun! Don't be shy! No judgment, just a game. <3

You guys. I got FOUR Yuletide stories including story and treats. I just... seriously? Seriously, Yuletide writers? I am so, so grateful for these amazing, amazing stories.

I have only had time to skim quickly through the shorter ones, and have had to put off reading the longer ones completely due to urgent family bacon and cinnamon rolls and presents and Cleaning All the Things and Cooking All the Things, but each of these fics is a JOY and if you have any knowledge of these fandoms or even if not, go!

I wish I had time to say more, but wanted to post about these right away to express my total squee, and give anyone reading this a chance to go read them. So without further ado, here are these amazing stories all for MEEEEEE (and now for you, too <3 . I am going to organize these by source to make things easier.

LITTLE WOMEN (and LITTLE MEN and JO'S BOYS)

Okay, look, the Little Women, Little Men and Jo's Boys books were my frequent companions as a child. I read them over and over. I love Jo beyond all measure, and am hugely fond of every single character as well as the combination of old fashioned and cutting edge views evidenced in these books. More than anything, they're full of heart.

ANYWAY, I got a beautiful, beautiful story that combined everything I love and wanted into one beautifully characterized and written whole. I can't even. Just, go read this. (Okay, no, seriously, I love Nan so much and the writer did her justice ahhhh and then ALSO gave Dan a happier story because I love him and wanted some redemption and ALSO has a mature Jo and Laurie finding each other in a way that is respectful to Friedrich and Amy and I just... <3333)

Then I got a Treat by some AMAZING person who wrote a huge, long fic that goes AU at an earlier place in the story. I am DYING because all I want is time to read it... from the first bits I was able to skim, it looks like its gorgeously written and again, perfectly characterized ahhhhhhh go away, family!

THE FARSEER SERIES

Okay, so the second set of two fics I got are for Robin Hobb's The Farseer Series. I so desperately wanted more of the Fool, and/or Fitz and the Fool. I found this entire universe fascinating beyond all measure, and yearned to see more of these characters and their emotional journeys. Wow, did I luck out!

This story has a perfect voice and gives me the resolution I so craved for Fitz and the Fool. It seemed impossible to me that their bond could actually be severed. This fic beautifully shows how it might go, always staying respectful to Molly, which I appreciate so much, were Fitz to eventually realize he needed to find the Fool. I can't wait to have time to go back and savor this -- family obligations are seriously interfering right now! But you can go read it, right now:

And then this story is a fascinating look at the Fool. I'd said that I'm fascinated by the Fool and the ambiguity of his gender, and just in general would love to see any scenes that were offscreen in the books. This fic delivers a fascinating look at all those things, and in particular gives a heartbreaking insight into the Fool's childhood, at both her original home and at court. Wow, I must have been very, very nice and not very naughty this year, to get stories like these! <3

1. I have TWO gifts in my AO3 gift basket -- I first noticed it a couple of days ago but couldn't post about it -- meaning that someone wrote me a Treat as well as a main story, and this is my reaction: adlkjfaslfjldskjfaskj!!! I've been so focused on writing that I haven't completely considered the incredible fact that someone(s) WROTE ME A STORY in one of the small fandoms of my heart Ahhhhhhhh and I'm getting SO. EXCITED.

2. I feel already so very showered with gifts (TWO fics waiting for me eeeeeee), but just in case anyone's looking, I do have a Dear Writer letter and it's tagged, but here's the link to save time: on LJ; ON DW

3. I just completed my final edit on my main Yuletide assignment, and I have to say that though there are certainly things I could do more/better, I'm still so in love with these characters and, well, writing that fic just gave me so much joy.

4. Now we come to the BEARS, aka my Pinch Hit. Proof that having a good idea is not enough to make a good story! And that two days is not enough for someone of my capabilities to write a great story! Not that that is in any way surprising! I just have to give huge hugs to the various friends who are/have been working to try to Fix Things and keep me going, because Pinch Hits are SCARY YO.

5. Oh. I suppose I'm supposed to make Christmas happen around here? *peers around at house and family* But I want to work on my fic! *whine* Okay, taking a deep breath and diving in to the Pinch Hit and getting a holiday ready. *cracks knuckles* Words, obey me!

haha my gifter and I must have posted our fics within an hour of each other. \o/ I love you already, writer who wrote a fic for me... omg, I can hardly believe I'm getting a fic in one of my fandoms aldskjfldskfdj!!!

lol I can't believe I took a pinch hit, especially after the huge project my main fic turned into (happily so though).

This pinch hit needed taking, though. Due "afternoon east coast time on the 24th." I wonder what ~afternoon means. :DDD

Now to arrange Christmas for my family, clean all the things and cook all the things, manage all the money lol, and, oh yeah, WRITE ANOTHER FIC THAT IS A PERSON'S ACTUAL YULETIDE FIC NOT JUST A TREAT ACKKKKKK.

seriously, i never complain about anything, but getting rid of subject lines despite all the uproar is so shitty i just. honestly, i didn't believe they were really going to do it.

yeah.

kradam_kiss has lost all subject lines in prompt posts, which... no big deal, we can work around it (and actually I'm going to be mirroring the whole comm on dw STAT (I mean, there's a kk dw but nothing's in it. yet.). but all the kink memes, the comms, freaking EVERYTHING that works that way on lj... chaos.

(okay I guess subject lines of a sort are still available if the comm has customized comment pages, so some comms are doing that as an interim measure, but most seem like they don't like it -- the format doesn't work too well (or at all... I'm hearing that from some people). I don't know all the pros/cons but I'm sure will be learning them soon :D)

i know there are lots of other things i'll probably hate too -- and undoubtedly some that are awesome -- but this is just--i don't even know what to call it.

oh right. no comment preview. that makes sense. NOT.

furthermore, talk about accessibility. i can hardly read the font. at first i thought there was something wrong with my eyes.

edit: LOL: ninety pages of comments aka HATE: http://lj-releases.livejournal.com/71858.html

:(((((

fyi, dreamwidth is offering its usual free accounts with no invite codes required, at least through the end of the year, to give people a port in the storm. and yes, dw allows subject lines. Go here to set one up.

edit: I'm going to finish my Yuletide fic and pull the holidays together around home, and then I'm going to decide what to do. One thing I know is happening STAT is mirroring my personal journal as well as the kk comm :((((

/goes back to writing lockdown

For a few days I'm unlikely to read my flist/circle or respond to comments. I'll check in on my email though so if you need me, drop a comment here or email me directly.

I'm going into lockdown because I have to finish writing, and then finish editing, my Yuletide fic, and then respond to beta comments, etc.

I'm freaking out about it, actually, because I'm not nearly as done as I wanted to be. As in, not done. Deadline looming. But it should be fine -- I have tons of it written, and I do know where it's going and have it blocked out and all that, but still, getting the words down -- and then right -- is the hard part at this point.

Let me know if there's anything I need to know! <333
